Oral Biopsy Services

At Cosimi Dental Implants & Periodontics, we prioritize your health and well-being. If we suspect any abnormal tissue in your mouth, we may recommend an oral biopsy to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Biopsies allow us to assess potential concerns, such as gum disease, oral cancer, or other conditions that could affect your oral health.

What is an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from your mouth for examination. This sample is then sent to a laboratory, where it is analyzed by a pathologist to help diagnose any potential issues. Biopsies are an essential tool for detecting and diagnosing conditions that can’t be identified through routine exams alone.

Why Would I Need an Oral Biopsy?

Biopsies are typically recommended if we notice any unusual changes in your gums, cheeks, tongue, or other areas of your mouth, such as:

  • Unexplained sores or lesions that don’t heal
  • Lumps or growths in the mouth or gums
  • Discoloration of the tissues, such as white or red patches
  • Changes in texture of the tissue, like thickening or roughness

Detecting potential problems early is crucial for effective treatment. A biopsy allows us to diagnose and address these concerns promptly.

What to Expect During the Procedure

An oral biopsy is generally a quick and straightforward procedure that can be performed in our office. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Local Anesthesia – We’ll numb the area to ensure you're comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
  2. Tissue Sample Collection – Using a small tool, we'll remove a tiny sample of the abnormal tissue. The process typically takes just a few minutes.
  3. Post-Procedure Care – You may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or bleeding for a few days, but we’ll provide clear aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

The biopsy sample will be sent to a lab for analysis, and we will follow up with you once the results are available.
